Steve Trautlein, for metropolis.japantoday.com, reports on the gorgeous new Apple Store in Tokyo.
By opening their five-story Ginza branch in a can't-miss location across the street from fabled depato Matsuya, Apple looks to build on the success of its US-based stores by importing that same formula into Tokyo. Tech gurus, artists, architects and musicians will all be on hand in the coming weeks to inaugurate Apple's first foray outside the US, while workshops will preach the Mac mantra to PC-weary Tokyoites.
"Our [dedicated] customers will find us wherever we put a store," said Apple founder and CEO Steve Jobs, who was on hand for the opening festivities. Jobs added that they chose the location of the spacious, brightly lit shop-which has the widest uninterrupted storefront in all of Ginza-for both prestige and the ability to draw in curious window-shoppers. "We also wanted to capture people who know Windows. We want to ambush them."
Besides the full slate of Japan-available Macs, the Ginza branch features iPods, digital cameras and camcorders. For Mac newbies, Apple offers instruction in the form of its "Studio Series" sessions, which introduce both hardware and specialized. Ranging in price from •11,000-•16,000, the four-hour, two-session classes take place in a dedicated learning studio on the fifth floor.

Don't imagine we're going crazy for neckwear or anything, after posting about skull ties only a few days ago - but this needs to be seen, if only because it's an outrageous example of getting on the iPod bandwagon. Created by British shirt-maker, Thomas Pink it's officially called the "commuter tie" and has a pocket sewn on the reverse to hold an iPod Nano....
Today Steve Jobs gave the keynote at Macworld 2004 in San Francisco. The iPod mini is very exciting, as is iLife 4. The most exciting thing of the day for me, however, was the little remake of the original Apple Macintosh ad from 1984. My favorite TV commercial of all time has been subtly enhanced by including an iPod. It has been 20 years...

The International Cut and Paste Digital Design Tournament which kicked off on 8 September has been hosting live design events in various U.S. and European cities over the last couple of months with an Asian and Australian leg of the competition still to come. I don't smoke, but if I did, I would use one of these new Superflat Ninja Ashtrays (above left). A collaboration with Mexico City's hip houseware brand DFC, Yoko Devereaux expands beyond the tailored knitwear the label's known for to add some well-designed home furnishings. Also included in the collection is the Cabron Bottle Opener (below), a solid brass bottle opener featuring a brass...
Our friends at Kiosk have just introduced their fifth and latest collection, this time sourced from the far reaches of Finland. Like always, the Kiosk team traveled abroad to find the best everyday classics. The collection features a lot of bold retro designs and items worth it just for packaging that references both '60s graphics and Finnish folk patterns, like a simple carton of...
